Past Events
The Fallbrook Fire Safe Council sponsored their second “chipping day” of 2026 on Saturday, March 28th at the corner of S. Mission Rd. and Pepper Tree Ln. from 7:30am to 1:30pm. The event was offered to residents of Fallbrook, Bonsall, DeLuz and Rainbow.

Throughout the day, over 58 community members brought over 214 pickup truck equivalent loads of material equating to over 34,240 cu ft of cut vegetation that produced over 3,300 cu ft of untreated mulch. The chipped/shredded material was deposited into two “roll-off” containers provided by the EDCO satellite facility in Fallbrook. The untreated mulch has been transferred to the Green Waste Center in Escondido for processing and then transferred to the mulch distribution center in Ramona where it will be made available to residents throughout San Diego County.

Supporting the event was the San Diego Fire/CalFire team from Spring Valley. Their crew process over 600 cu ft of chipped material. Stephen Ware, Fire Prevention Specialist II, from San Diego Fire/CalFire team stated “our team really enjoys coming to Fallbrook to support these events because we know they will be well attended and that these efforts by the community will help reduce the exposure of wildfires to the surrounding area”.

The event was supported by three “hard charging” Marines from Camp Pendleton who did a fantastic job of assisting with the offloading of the cut vegetation and helping to place the material into the chippers. Without their support this event would not have been as successful as it was. Additionally, two members of the Fallbrook Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol and five members of the Fire Safe Council supported the event. California Tree Service of San Marcos provided the crew and chipping equipment in support of the event.

ZONE 0 INFORMATION
|
|
|
|
Zone 0 is key for wildfire defense and preventing fires from spreading to your home.
|
|
|
|
Zone 0 is the horizontal area within the first five feet around the structure and any outbuildings, attached decks, and stairs. The zone also includes the area under attached decks and stair landings. To be most effective, the zone should incorporate a 6-inch vertical area between the ground and the start of the building’s exterior siding.
|
|
Zone 0 reduces the likelihood of structure ignition by reducing the potential for direct ignition of the structure from flame contact, by embers that accumulate at the base of a wall, and/or indirect ignitions when embers ignite vegetation, vegetative debris, or other combustible materials located close to the structure, resulting in either radiant heat and/or direct flame contact exposure to the structure.

There is a focus on reducing combustible material in the area defined as Zone 0 because these materials are the biggest cause of ember related fires based on research from previous fires. Combustible material alongside a structure increase paths for embers and fire to travel that cause structures to be susceptible.
|

The State of California is working on outlining regulations to best manage the Zone 0 region as it relates to combustible materials. These regulations will define what all properties will need to do to be in compliance in the coming years.

Tentative Timeline for California Zone 0 Final Guidelines
During their April 23rd Zone Zero Advisory Meeting, the California Board of Forestry & Fire Protection subcommittee announced their expected timeline of when their final Zone Zero rulemaking will be made and when regulations take effect.

Significant Changes to Draft Zone 0 Final Guidelines
|
One of the new concepts being introduced is the “Safety Zone” within Zone 0 that occupies immediately below the eaves and is at least 1 foot away from the exterior siding if the roof does not have eaves. This Safety Zone is to have absolutely no combustible material whereas the other parts of Zone 0 outside of the Safety Zone are allowed to have some combustible vegetation. To reiterate, this new proposal would allow vegetation in Zone 0 if it is outside the Safety Zone and well maintained. Examples of potential allowable vegetation include small potted plants, smaller in-ground non-woody plants (18” max), lawn or other ground cover (3” max height), and well-maintained trees.

It’s too early to say how these new draft guidelines will affect the Zone 0 guidelines that have already been put into place here in San Diego County by San Diego Fire-Rescue and San Diego County Fire.
|
